The kWh formula (with a worked example)

Electricity is billed by the kilowatt-hour (kWh), often just called a "unit." Two steps turn an appliance's wattage into a cost:

Energy (kWh) = Watts × Hours ÷ 1000

Cost = kWh × rate per unit

Worked example

A 1,500-watt space heater running 3 hours a day at a rate of $0.15 per unit:

  • Energy: 1500 × 3 ÷ 1000 = 4.5 kWh per day
  • Daily cost: 4.5 × $0.15 = $0.68
  • Monthly cost: $0.68 × 30 ≈ $20.25

The $0.15 rate is illustrative — substitute the unit rate printed on your own bill. To convert watts to kilowatts directly, divide by 1,000 (a 1,500 W heater is 1.5 kW), then multiply by hours to get kWh.

How much do 250 units of electricity cost?

It depends on your tariff, but most utilities use telescopic slab billing: your units are split into bands, and each band is charged at its own rate — not the whole bill at the top rate. As you cross into a higher slab, only the units in that slab cost more.

Worked 250-unit example

With the sample slab rates below, 250 units break down like this:

The energy charge is $28.00. Notice that charging all 250 units at the top $0.16 rate would give $40.00 — telescopic billing saves the difference because the first 200 units stay in cheaper bands.

Slab rates are illustrative. Your actual bill also adds fixed charges (a flat monthly or per-kW connection fee), plus taxes, duties, and surcharges that vary by provider and region. Check your bill for the exact slabs and extras.

Estimated values at $0.15/kWh; wattage and usage vary widely by model and household. *A refrigerator is plugged in 24/7 but its compressor cycles on and off, so the effective run time is only a few hours a day. Scale any figure to your own rate — at $0.25/kWh, multiply each cost by about 1.67.

How to read your meter

Your meter counts total units used since it was installed. To find how much you have used in a billing period, subtract the previous reading from the current one:

Units consumed = Current reading − Previous reading

  1. Find last period's reading — printed on your previous bill.
  2. Read the meter now. On a digital or smart meter, note the whole number of kWh shown. On a dial meter, read each dial left to right and record the lower digit when a pointer sits between two numbers.
  3. Subtract: current − previous = units consumed this period.
  4. Multiply units by your rate (or slab rates), then add any fixed charges and taxes to estimate the bill.

Example

If last month's reading was 40,820 and this month's is 41,070, you used 41,070 − 40,820 = 250 units. Apply your tariff to those 250 units to estimate the energy charge.

Reading the meter yourself on the same day each month is a quick way to spot a spike before the bill arrives.
