Birthstones by Month
Once you enter your birth date, the tool reports the gemstone tied to your birth month. Two lists are in common use: the traditional stones handed down over centuries, and the modern list standardized by the American jewellery trade in 1912 and later revised. Several months carry more than one modern option, which is why a June baby might be told their stone is pearl, alexandrite, or moonstone.

A Worked Countdown
Say today is July 9, 2026 and your birthday is October 15. Because this year's date has not passed, the next birthday is October 15, 2026. Counting forward gives 22 days left in July, 31 in August, 30 in September, and 15 in October, for a total of 98 days. That divides cleanly into 14 weeks (98 divided by 7), and works out to roughly 3.2 months using the 30.44-day average month. To name the weekday, you can reduce the day count modulo 7: 98 is exactly 14 weeks, so the birthday lands on the same weekday as today plus zero shift. October 15, 2026 falls on a Thursday, which is what the tool displays.
February 29 Birthdays
People born on a leap day, sometimes called leaplings, only see their exact date once every four years. In common years there is no February 29, so conventions differ on when the birthday is observed. England, Wales, and Hong Kong treat the legal birthday as March 1, while several other places and much informal practice use February 28. When you enter February 29 as your birth date, this calculator counts to the next actual February 29 rather than a substitute date, so a countdown started in 2026 targets the 2028 leap year.
The Birthday Paradox
A famous quirk of probability: in a room of just 23 people, there is a better than 50 percent chance that two of them share a birthday. At 57 people the odds climb past 99 percent. Birthdays are not spread evenly across the year either. In United States data, mid-September dates are the most common, a pattern that traces back to conceptions around the winter holidays, and February 29 is the rarest date simply because it shows up only in leap years.
