How age is calculated (the formula)
Your age is the number of full years, months, and days from your date of birth to today (or any chosen date). The number of full years = current year − birth year, minus one if this year's birthday hasn't happened yet. The leftover months and days are counted as the remainder.
age = (full years) + (remaining months) + (remaining days)
First subtract the birth year from the current year, drop one year if the birthday is still ahead, then count the months and days left over. This is the Gregorian-calendar method used on official forms.
Worked example
Say you were born on 5 September 1990 and you check your age on 5 August 2026. The raw year gap is 2026 − 1990 = 36. But your 2026 birthday (5 September) hasn't arrived yet on 5 August, so you subtract one: you are still 35. Counting from your last birthday on 5 September 2025 up to 5 August 2026 gives 11 completed months. So on 5 August 2026 you are 35 years, 11 months old — turning 36 one month later.

The tricky month-end edge case
When you count from the end of one month to the end of a longer or shorter month, two reasonable answers appear — and different tools give different results. Because months don't all have the same number of days, "one month later" is genuinely ambiguous at the edges.
Take a span from 28 February to 31 March. You could say that is exactly 1 month (Feb 28 → Mar 28) plus 3 extra days, or you could say it is 1 whole month because both are the last day of their month. Neither is "wrong" — they just use different rules.
The convention this calculator uses
We complete a month when you reach the same day-of-month in the next month. If that day doesn't exist (for example, there is no 31st in a 30-day month), the month completes on that month's last day, and any surplus days roll into the next count. This matches the standard calendar method used on official forms.
Different age systems around the world
Most of the world uses the Western (international) age system, but a few traditional systems count differently. This calculator always reports Western age; the notes below explain how the others differ.
Western (international) age
You are 0 at birth and gain a year on each birthday. This is the standard used for legal documents, medicine, and forms worldwide, and it is what this calculator returns.
Traditional East Asian / Korean age
You are born at age 1, and everyone ages up together on New Year's Day rather than on their own birthday. A baby born on 31 December can be counted as "2 years old" the very next day.
South Korea officially moved to international age in June 2023. The traditional counting system added one or two years to a person's Western age, which caused confusion on official records. Since the change, laws and documents in South Korea use the same system as the rest of the world — so your Korean age and your international age now match.
